1. Overwatering
Cannabis roots need oxygen. Soil that stays wet holds no air. Roots turn brown, then soft, then rot. A 5-gallon pot of soil holds enough water for 2 to 4 days in veg. Lift the pot. If it feels light, water. If it feels heavy, wait. Water until 10 to 20 percent of the pot volume runs out the bottom, then stop.
2. pH outside the range
Soil pH from 6.0 to 7.0 keeps nutrients available to roots. Coco and hydro run 5.5 to 6.5. A soil pH of 7.8 locks out iron and manganese. Leaves turn yellow between the veins while veins stay green. Buy a pH pen, calibrate it each month, and test the runoff, not just the input.
3. Too much light and heat
Seedlings burn under full power. A 100-watt LED at 24 inches and 25 percent power is enough for week one. Keep the canopy at 68 to 77 F. Above 85 F, growth stops, buds stretch into foxtails, and terpenes drop. Measure at canopy height, not at the tent wall.
4. Overfeeding
Nutrient burn shows as dark green leaves with burnt tips that curl down. Start at one quarter of the label dose. Raise it over 2 weeks. Fresh potting soil carries enough nutrients for 3 to 4 weeks. Adding more does not add yield.
5. Harvest at the wrong time
Trichomes go clear, then cloudy, then amber. Clear means low THC. Cloudy means peak. Amber means more CBN and a heavier effect. Check buds with a 30x to 60x loupe, not the sugar leaves. Most photoperiod plants finish in 8 to 10 weeks of 12/12. Autoflowers finish in 9 to 11 weeks from seed.
6. Dry and cure too fast
Dry at 60 F and 55 to 60 percent humidity for 10 to 14 days. Small stems snap, buds stay spongy. Then jar the buds at 58 to 62 percent humidity and burp each jar for 2 weeks. A 3-day dry at 80 F traps chlorophyll. The smoke tastes like hay and stays that way.
7. No air movement and light leaks
Still air grows mold. Botrytis shows as gray fuzz on dense colas. Run one fan below the canopy and one above it. Light leaks during the 12-hour dark period cause hermaphrodites and seeds. Sit inside the tent with a lamp on and the room dark, then check every seam and zipper.
8. Skip the rules on plant counts
Home grow limits differ by state. California allows 6 plants for adults 21 and older at a private residence. Some states allow none. Counties and cities add their own caps on plant count, canopy size, and outdoor visibility. Check the state cannabis agency before you germinate a seed.
