Check the out-the-door price first
A menu price is not the price you pay. State excise tax, sales tax, and local tax add to the total. Ask for the out-the-door price before you compare stores. One store can show a lower shelf price and a higher final bill.
Record the final price per gram or per milligram of THC. That number lets you compare products. The shelf price does not show that.
Medical Cannabis Prices for Card Holders: A Real-Cost Guide
Reasons prices rise
Costs move through the supply chain. Indoor grows pay for electricity, cooling, and labor. Power prices change by season and region. A grow that pays more for power charges more per pound.
States require testing for potency, pesticides, mold, and heavy metals. Each batch carries a testing fee. Track-and-trace systems add software and labeling costs. Packaging rules add costs for child-resistant containers and labels.
Federal tax law adds pressure. IRC Section 280E blocks standard business deductions for cannabis firms. Firms pay tax on gross income, not net income. That cost lands in retail prices.
State license limits can cap the number of stores or growers. Fewer sellers means less price competition. Excise taxes add a percentage or a fixed amount per ounce.
Parameters to check at the counter
- Tax rate: state excise, sales tax, local add-on.
- Package date and harvest date.
- Net weight in grams or ounces.
- THC and CBD percentages from the batch label.
- Testing lab name and batch number.
- Unit price per gram and per 10 mg THC.
Pitfalls
- Comparing a pre-tax menu price to a final receipt.
- Buying a large package for a discount and losing money on unused product.
- Ignoring package dates. Older flower can cost less and deliver less.
- Assuming a price drop after harvest. Testing, taxes, and store costs do not fall with wholesale flower.
Ask two stores for the same product and the same weight. Compare the out-the-door totals. Keep the receipt. The receipt shows the tax lines and the unit price. That record tells you which store costs less for the same batch.
