Short answer
High THCA flower tests at 15% to 30% THCA by dry weight. Most samples land between 18% and 26%. That figure is THCA, the acid form. It is not delta-9 THC. The same sample usually tests below 0.3% delta-9 THC, which is the federal limit for hemp.

What a potency panel lists
A lab report from a high THCA sample usually shows these rows:
- THCA: 15% to 30% of dry weight.
- Delta-9 THC: 0.1% to 0.3%.
- Total THC: THCA multiplied by 0.877, plus delta-9 THC.
- CBDA, CBGA, THCVA: often under 1% combined.
- Total terpenes: 1% to 3%.
- Moisture: 8% to 12%.
A sample with 24% THCA and 0.2% delta-9 THC reports total THC near 21.2%.
High THC Indica Flower for Pain and Sleep
Why total THC reads lower than THCA
THCA holds an extra carboxyl group. Heat removes it and the molecule becomes THC. The loss of mass is part of the reaction, so the conversion factor is 0.877. One gram of THCA yields about 0.877 grams of THC. Labs apply that factor to the THCA number and add any delta-9 THC already present.

This is why a flower jar can print 25% THCA and 22% total THC. The two numbers describe the same sample at different points in the chemistry.
What moves the result
- Moisture: wet flower reports lower percentages. Labs correct to dry weight, but methods vary.
- Trim: sugar leaf and stem lower the potency of the tested sample.
- Sample selection: a lab tests a few grams from a lot. That sample may not match every bud in the bag.
- Harvest date: THCA peaks late in flower and drops as the plant ages.
- Storage: heat and light convert THCA to THC over time.
- Method: HPLC is the standard for acid cannabinoids. Older GC methods decarboxylate the sample in the instrument and report inflated THC.
How to read the COA
- Find the THCA row and the delta-9 THC row.
- Check that the total THC row matches THCA times 0.877 plus delta-9 THC.
- Check the moisture row. Values above 12% suggest the sample was not dried before testing.
- Check the lab name, the sample date, and the batch ID. All three should match the product label.
- Check for a delta-8 or THCP row. High THCA flower should not show added minor cannabinoids.
Legal limit context
USDA hemp rules define hemp as cannabis with 0.3% or less delta-9 THC on a dry weight basis. THCA is not the value in that rule. A flower lot can pass the federal test while holding 25% THCA, because the acid form does not count toward the delta-9 limit at the time of testing.
State programs add their own rules. Some require total THC testing, some require pre-harvest sampling within 30 days of harvest, and some set a negligence threshold above 0.3%. Check the rules for the state where the product is sold.
Numbers to treat with caution
Claims above 32% THCA are rare. High values can come from a hand-selected top bud, a small sample, or a lab with loose calibration. A single COA covers one batch and one sample. It does not describe every unit sold.
