Where the letters come from

Break the word into four parts. "Cannab" points to the plant itself. The "-ol" ending signals an alcohol group, the same suffix you see in ethanol. "Tetra" means four and "hydro" means hydrogen, so tetrahydro tells a chemist that four hydrogen atoms were added to the ring structure compared with the raw acid form of the molecule. String it together and you get tetrahydrocannabinol.

THC vs CBD: the differences that matter
- Effects: THC produces euphoria, altered perception, and drowsiness. CBD does not produce a high.
- Receptors: THC binds CB1 and CB2 receptors directly. CBD binds those receptors weakly and influences other targets, including serotonin receptors.
- Source: both come from cannabis. Under US law, hemp is cannabis with 0.3% or less delta-9 THC by dry weight, which is why most CBD products are hemp-derived.

THCA and CBDA: the acids you actually see on a plant
Raw cannabis holds very little THC or CBD. It holds their acid forms instead, THCA and CBDA. Heat or time strips away a carboxyl group in a process called decarboxylation, and THCA becomes THC while CBDA becomes CBD. Smoking, vaping, dabbing, and baking all trigger that conversion. A raw cannabis leaf, eaten as is, will not get you high.

If a certificate lists only THCA, the number understates what the product delivers once it is heated. Also check the batch date and the lab name. A recent test from an accredited lab tells you more than any marketing claim on the front of the package.
