A cannabis blunt wrap is a sheet of tobacco leaf, homogenized tobacco paper, or a plant-based substitute used to roll ground cannabis into a cigar-shaped smoke. The roller moistens or splits the sheet, adds 0.5 to 1 gram of flower, and seals the edge. Most wraps sold in the US measure about 4 to 6 inches long.

What a blunt wrap is
A blunt wrap is the outer layer. It is not the cannabis and not a finished cigar. Manufacturers sell it flat in a pouch, or pre-shaped as a cone. The user supplies the flower. A traditional blunt starts as a cigar: the smoker splits the cigar, removes the tobacco filler, and replaces it with cannabis. A blunt wrap skips that step by selling the leaf ready to fill.
Materials
- Tobacco leaf. Whole cured leaf, cut into sheets. It burns slow and adds nicotine.
- Homogenized tobacco sheet. Ground tobacco stem and leaf reformed into paper. This is the base of most mass-market wraps.
- Non-tobacco wraps. Hemp paper, palm leaf, rice paper, and cellulose. These contain no nicotine unless the label says so.
Sizes and formats
Flat sheets run about 4 by 6 inches. Pre-rolled cones hold 0.5 to 1.5 grams. For scale, a standard rolling paper is 70 to 110 millimeters long, and a 1¼ paper holds about 0.3 to 0.5 grams. A blunt holds more flower and burns longer.
Blunt vs joint
A joint uses thin paper, usually wood pulp, rice, or hemp. A blunt uses a thicker leaf wrap. The leaf adds weight, slows the burn, and changes the draw. Blunts also carry tobacco taste and, in tobacco wraps, nicotine.
Nicotine and smoke
Tobacco wraps deliver nicotine. A smoker who inhales takes in nicotine along with the cannabis. Combustion of any plant material creates tar, carbon monoxide, and fine particles. Cannabis smoke contains irritants and carcinogens that overlap with tobacco smoke.
US rules
The FDA deemed cigars, cigarillos, and blunt wraps that contain tobacco to be tobacco products in 2016. Federal law sets the minimum purchase age at 21. Several states and cities restrict flavored tobacco wraps, including California (2022) and Massachusetts (2020). Some states require a tobacco retail license in addition to a cannabis license. Rules vary by state and county, so check the local list before buying or selling.
Storage
Leaf wraps dry out and crack. A sealed pouch or a humidor at 65 to 70 percent relative humidity keeps them pliable. Dry wraps can be rehydrated with a damp paper towel for 10 to 15 minutes. Store cannabis flower at 58 to 62 percent relative humidity.
