Short answer
No clinical trial shows that cannabis repairs muscle tissue or shortens recovery time after training. Evidence for pain relief and sleep is mixed and comes from small studies. THC impairs reaction time and balance, which raises injury risk for hours after use.
What cannabis does in the body
Cannabis contains more than 100 cannabinoids. THC and CBD are the two studied most. THC binds CB1 receptors in the brain and spinal cord. CBD binds CB1 and CB2 receptors with low affinity and does not cause intoxication.
cannabis for muscle recovery after workout
CB1 receptors sit in areas that control pain, memory, appetite, and movement. CBD acts on other targets, including 5-HT1A and TRPV1, which play roles in pain signaling.

CBD and soreness
Some athletes use CBD for delayed onset muscle soreness, or DOMS. DOMS peaks 24 to 72 hours after hard training. Human trials of CBD for soreness are few and small. Most use 25 to 150 mg per day. Results are mixed. Reviews find no clear benefit for muscle recovery. No study shows CBD builds muscle or speeds tissue repair.

THC and sleep
Sleep drives recovery. THC shortens the time to fall asleep in some users. It also suppresses REM sleep at higher doses. Tolerance to the sleep effect builds in days to weeks. Stopping THC after heavy use can cause rebound insomnia.
CBD at doses above 100 mg is under study for anxiety-related sleep problems. Evidence remains thin.
Risks for training
- Heart rate climbs 20 to 100 percent within minutes of smoking THC, per NIDA. The rise can last up to 3 hours.
- THC slows reaction time and harms balance. Driving and heavy lifting carry risk.
- Smoke contains tar and irritants. CDC links cannabis smoke to bronchitis and airway irritation.
- THC can raise appetite. This may help athletes who struggle to eat enough calories.
- About 3 in 10 people who use cannabis meet criteria for a use disorder at some point, per NIDA.
Timing and dose
There is no standard recovery dose. Product labels list THC and CBD in milligrams. Edible THC takes 30 to 120 minutes to peak. Inhaled THC peaks in minutes. Edible effects last longer.
Common practice is to keep THC away from training and lifting sessions. Wait at least 4 hours before driving or heavy lifting. Low THC and high CBD products are the usual starting point.
Legality in the US
Cannabis is Schedule I under federal law. States set their own rules. As of early 2025, 24 states and DC allow adult use. Most states allow medical use. Minimum age is 21 for adult use in most states. Buy from licensed stores.
What is unknown
No long-term trial measures cannabis against recovery markers such as creatine kinase or muscle protein synthesis. Dose, route, and THC-to-CBD ratio vary across studies. Federal rules limit the cannabis supply available for research.
