THCV in Short

THCV is tetrahydrocannabivarin, a cannabinoid found in Cannabis sativa. It has a 3-carbon propyl side chain. THC has a 5-carbon pentyl chain. At low doses THCV blocks the CB1 receptor. THC activates it. That difference drives most of the research interest in THCV. Human trials are small. Most evidence comes from cells and rodents.

THCV Dosage Guide: How Much to Take and What to Expect

What THCV Is

THCV is a phytocannabinoid. Plants make it as THCVA, the acid form. Heat converts THCVA to THCV. Most cannabis flowers test below 1% THCV by weight of total cannabinoids. Chemovars bred for THCV reach 3% to 4%. Doug's Varin is one example. Some African landrace lines also carry THCV.

The propyl chain changes receptor binding. THCV acts as a CB1 antagonist at low doses. It acts as a CB2 partial agonist. At higher doses, animal data shows CB1 activation.

Research Areas

Appetite and Weight

THC triggers appetite. Low-dose THCV does the opposite in rodents. Mouse studies from 2009 found THCV reduced food intake in fasted and fed animals. The effect appeared at CB1 receptors. No human trial has tested THCV as a weight loss drug.

THCV vs THC: A Comprehensive Comparison Review

Blood Sugar and Type 2 Diabetes

Mouse work in 2013 found THCV improved glucose tolerance and protected pancreatic islet cells. A 2016 pilot trial gave 62 adults with type 2 diabetes CBD plus THCV at 5 mg twice daily for 13 weeks. The trial was small. It did not report a drop in HbA1c. Some liver and lipid markers changed. Larger trials are needed.

Seizures

THCV and CBDV reduced seizure activity in mouse models. Human data is limited to case reports. Children with treatment-resistant epilepsy have received THCV-rich extracts alongside other drugs. No controlled trial of THCV alone exists.

Inflammation and Pain

THCV shows anti-inflammatory effects in cell assays and rodent models. CB2 activity is one proposed path. Human pain trials are not published.

Parkinson's Disease

Rodent models of Parkinson's disease show THCV reduced motor impairment and protected dopamine neurons. That work used mice. No large human trial is published.

Doses Used in Studies

Rodent studies used 0.1 mg/kg to 10 mg/kg. The 2016 diabetes trial used 5 mg of THCV twice daily. Other human work used isolated THCV at 10 mg to 100 mg per day. Inhaled THCV reaches the blood in 5 to 10 minutes. Oral THCV takes 30 to 90 minutes. Bioavailability for both routes is low and varies between people.

THCV and THC Together

Most flower contains THCV beside THC. THCV may blunt some THC effects at CB1. Users report less hunger and clearer head effects with high-THCV chemovars. Those reports are anecdotal. No controlled study has measured the mix.

Legal Status in the US

The federal Controlled Substances Act does not name THCV. DEA statements treat THC isomers and compounds made from THC as Schedule I. Hemp-derived THCV sits in a gray zone. State rules differ. In states with legal adult-use cannabis, dispensaries sell THCV flower, vapes, and edibles. Buyers must be 21 or older.

What Is Unknown

  • No approved drug contains THCV.
  • Long-term safety data does not exist.
  • Human dose guidelines do not exist.
  • THCV detection on standard drug tests is test-dependent and unclear.
  • Label accuracy in the hemp market varies.
