THCA does not get you high. THC does. The two molecules differ by one carboxyl group, and heat removes it. THCA is the acid form stored in fresh cannabis plant tissue. THC is the decarboxylated form created by heat. Effects follow the structure. THC binds CB1 receptors in the brain. THCA binds those same receptors at low affinity.
Molecular difference
THCA is tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, formula C22H30O4, molar mass 358.5 g/mol. THC is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, formula C21H30O2, molar mass 314.5 g/mol. The gap is CO2, released as gas when the acid group leaves the molecule.
Decarboxylation
Conversion starts near 105 C (220 F) and moves at a high rate above 130 C (266 F). A joint, a vape coil, and a dab nail all reach those numbers. Raw flower eaten in a salad does not.

THCA effects
Published human trials on isolated THCA are few. Reported effects in early research include anti-inflammatory action, nausea reduction, and neuroprotection in cell and animal models. Oral THCA has low bioavailability. No controlled study shows euphoria or intoxication from THCA at common doses.
THC effects
THC is a partial agonist at CB1 and CB2 receptors. Common effects include euphoria, relaxation, altered time sense, dry mouth, red eyes, increased heart rate, and short-term memory changes. Anxiety and paranoia occur at high doses, more often in people without tolerance.
Onset and duration
- Inhaled THC: onset 5 to 10 minutes, peak 15 to 30 minutes, duration 2 to 4 hours.
- Oral THC: onset 30 to 90 minutes, duration 4 to 8 hours.
Label math
Total THC = THC + (THCA x 0.877). Hemp flower must test at or below 0.3% total delta-9 THC on a dry weight basis. A jar labeled 0.2% THCA adds little THC. A jar labeled 20% THCA delivers about 17.5% THC after heat.
Legal status
THCA is not named as a separate entry in the Controlled Substances Act. Federal hemp rules limit total delta-9 THC, and the THCA portion counts after the 0.877 multiplier. State laws differ. Some states ban THCA products by name. Check the rules where you buy.
