What a Sulfur Vaporizer Does
A sulfur vaporizer heats elemental sulfur until it turns to vapor. The vapor cools and settles on leaves, stems, and room surfaces as a thin film. That film kills powdery mildew spores that land on it. The vapor also reaches spores in gaps that sprays miss.

Sulfur works on contact. It does not move into leaf tissue. Powdery mildew fungi (Podosphaera, Golovinomyces, Leveillula) are obligate biotrophs. Their feeding structures sit inside plant cells. Sulfur stops new infections. It cannot remove colonies that already exist.

Rate and Timing
- Rate: labels often list a rate near 1 gram of sulfur per cubic meter of room volume. Rates differ by device. Read both the device label and the sulfur product label.
- Timing: run during the dark period. Light plus vapor can scorch leaves.
- Duration: 1 to 4 hours per cycle. Repeat every 7 to 14 days while conditions favor PM.
- Air: turn off exhaust fans, intake fans, and oscillating fans during the cycle. Exhaust the room after.
- Metal: cover or remove exposed metal. Sulfur vapor corrodes electronics, ballasts, LED drivers, and fan bearings.
Temperature and Phytotoxicity
Leaf damage risk rises when canopy temperature passes 90 F (32 C). Sulfur also reacts with horticultural oils. Wait 14 to 30 days between an oil spray and a sulfur vapor cycle. The same gap applies in reverse order.

Limits
- Flower: stop sulfur by week 2 or 3 of flower. Residue stays on buds, shifts smell and taste, and enters the smoke or vapor.
- Beneficials: sulfur kills predatory mites and other beneficial insects.
- Resistance: PM populations can build tolerance after repeated cycles. Rotate modes of action.
- Regulation: state cannabis rules differ. Some states restrict sulfur on cannabis. Check the state regulator first. The status is unknown in several states.
Safety
Heated sulfur forms sulfur dioxide. Sulfur dioxide irritates eyes, throat, and lungs. Wear a respirator with acid gas cartridges, gloves, and goggles for mixing and for room checks. Do not run a vaporizer in a space with people or pets. Follow the label re-entry interval. Many labels state 24 hours plus ventilation.

Integrated Plan
- Find the source. PM needs high humidity, still air, and a water film on leaves. Fix VPD, air exchange, and canopy airflow first.
- Sanitize. Cut infected leaves into a bag. Clean tools and trays.
- Spray early. Potassium bicarbonate, hydrogen peroxide products, and biologicals such as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens work on surfaces.
- Use sulfur vapor as a room-wide protectant in veg and early flower.
- Keep a log of every cycle, rate, and temperature.
Sulfur vaporizers suppress PM. They are one tool, not a cure. Environment and sanitation carry more weight than any burner.
