Short answer

A joint takes about two minutes to roll. You need ground cannabis, a rolling paper, a filter, and a grinder. Use 0.3 g to 0.5 g of flower in a 1¼ paper (78 mm). Grind the flower to pieces about 2 mm to 3 mm across. Fold a filter into an accordion, set it at one end, shape the cannabis into a line, tuck the paper edge over the flower, roll, and seal the gum strip.

The Easiest Joint Rolling Method

What you need

  • Rolling paper: 1¼ (78 mm), king size (110 mm), or single wide (70 mm).
  • Filter: card stock cut 5 mm to 8 mm wide, or a pre-rolled tip.
  • Grinder: two-piece or four-piece.
  • Flower: 0.3 g to 0.5 g for a 1¼ paper, 0.7 g to 1 g for king size.
  • Tray or a folded card to catch loose material.

Steps

1. Grind the flower

Break buds into the grinder. Turn 5 to 10 times. Stop when pieces are about 2 mm to 3 mm. Large pieces burn slow and leave gaps. Dust-sized pieces pull through the paper and clog the air path.

2. Build the filter

Cut a strip of card stock 5 mm to 8 mm wide and about 25 mm long. Fold it back and forth into an accordion with 5 to 8 folds. Roll the accordion into a cylinder. The filter keeps flower out of your mouth and holds the paper open.

3. Hold the paper

Place the paper in your non-dominant hand with the gum strip at the top edge, facing you. The gum strip is the thin band of adhesive along one long edge.

4. Add flower

Funnel the ground flower into the paper. Spread it along the center in a line about the same width as the filter. Keep the ends thinner than the middle.

5. Place the filter

Set the filter at one end of the flower line. Push it in with your thumb until it sits flush with the paper edge.

6. Tuck

Pinch the paper between your thumbs and index fingers. Roll the far edge forward and under the flower, then pull it back over the top of the pile. This is the tuck. If the paper folds over itself, unroll and start the tuck again.

7. Roll and seal

Roll your thumbs up and away from your body. The paper wraps around the flower. When the gum strip reaches the far side, wet it with saliva or a damp finger. Press it down and roll the joint through your fingers to close the seam.

8. Pack the ends

Tap the filter end on the tray to settle the flower. Twist the open end closed, or fold it flat and pinch. A packed joint draws better than a loose one.

9. Light

Hold the flame to the tip and pull. Keep the flame off the paper body. Rotate the joint to burn the tip even.

Common problems

  • Joint runs down one side: the flower line was uneven. Tap the joint to settle the fill, or reroll it.
  • Joint is too tight: air cannot pass. Roll it between your palms to loosen the fill, or use less flower.
  • Paper tears at the tuck: too much force. Hold the paper at the edges, not the middle.
  • Gum will not stick: some papers need water, not saliva. Wet the strip and hold for 3 to 5 seconds.

Legal note

Cannabis is legal for adults 21 and older in some US states. Possession limits and home-grow rules differ by state. Check your state law before you buy or carry flower.
