Short answer

Isopropyl alcohol is not required. Three options remove resin from glass: d-limonene (citrus terpene) cleaner, 190-proof ethanol (95% alcohol), and hot water with dish soap plus coarse salt for abrasion. White vinegar and baking soda handle mineral scale and ash. They do not strip resin.

What cannabis resin is

Resin is a mix of cannabinoids (THC, CBD), terpenes, waxes, and plant lipids. These compounds are nonpolar. Water is polar, so water alone does not dissolve them. White vinegar is 95% water and 5% acetic acid, also polar. It lifts hard-water scale and ash. It leaves the bowl coating in place.

Nonpolar solvents that occur in nature

  • d-Limonene. Extracted from orange peel. Boiling point 176 C. Dissolves resin, wax, and sticker adhesive. Sold as a concentrate or in ready-to-use pipe cleaners.
  • Ethanol. 190 proof, 95% alcohol. Flash point 12.8 C (55 F). Still a flammable liquid. Acts on resin in 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Plant oils. Coconut oil and olive oil. Fats soften resin over 30 to 60 minutes. They leave a film that needs a soap wash.

Method with d-limonene

  1. Empty ash and loose material into a trash bin.
  2. Pour 30 to 60 mL of limonene cleaner into the piece.
  3. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons coarse salt. Salt is the abrasive. It does not dissolve.
  4. Seal the openings with corks or your palms. Shake 60 to 90 seconds.
  5. Let the piece sit 15 to 30 minutes for heavy buildup.
  6. Pour the solvent into a sealed jar. Reuse it 2 to 3 times.
  7. Wash with hot water and 2 to 3 drops dish soap. Rinse 3 times.

Limonene attacks silicone, some acrylics, decals, and painted logos. Check the material first. Keep it off rubber gaskets. Limonene irritates skin and eyes. Ventilate the room. A 100 mL pour in a closed bathroom produces a strong orange smell that lingers for hours.

Method with grain alcohol

190-proof ethanol works faster than limonene on light resin. Use the same salt method. The main risk is fire. Flash point is 12.8 C (55 F). Keep the work area away from open flames, pilot lights, and running appliances. Do not heat alcohol in a microwave. Do not store the jar near a stove. Denatured alcohol is not food-safe. Avoid it for pieces you smoke from.

Method with baking soda and vinegar

Mix 2 tablespoons baking soda, 120 mL white vinegar, and 500 mL hot water. Soak 30 minutes. The fizz moves loose ash. Sodium acetate and water remain after the reaction, so the solution is close to neutral. Add 5 to 10 drops dish soap for surface film. Resin at the bottom of the bowl stays.

Heat and material limits

Water at 50 to 60 C softens resin and speeds any method. Boiling water cracks thin glass from thermal shock. Do not simmer a piece in milk. Burns and scorched protein are the risks, and evidence for the casein cleaning claim is thin. Never mix vinegar or other acids with bleach. Chlorine gas forms.
