Short answer
If you have one tent and want a harvest on a calendar, go autoflower. If you have a second space and want the same plant over and over, keep a mother. That is the whole decision, and everything else is detail.
Top Mother Plant Grow Tent Setup Guide
I get asked this most by people who just bought a 3x3 and are staring at seed listings. The honest answer comes down to one thing: do you want to clone, or do you want to plant a seed and be done?
What each one actually is
Mother plant
A mother is a photoperiod female you never flip. You keep her under 18 hours of light or more, feed her enough to stay healthy, and cut clones off her every few weeks. Every cutting is a genetic copy, so a room full of clones from one mother grows at the same rate, finishes together, and smokes the same. She can live for years if you re-clone her before she gets woody and tired.

Autoflower
Autoflowers carry ruderalis genetics, which means they flower on age, not on light schedule. Most finish somewhere around 8 to 11 weeks from seed depending on strain and pot size. You can run them on 20 hours of light the whole time, keep them in the same tent as vegging photos, and skip the light-proof flower room. You cannot keep a mother of an auto. A clone taken from an auto is the same age as the mother, so it flowers almost at once and yields very little.

Head to head
- Setup cost: a mother needs a second light and space. Autos run in one tent.
- Time to first harvest: autos, roughly 10 weeks from sprout. A mother adds weeks of veg before you even take the first cut.
- Consistency: mother wins, clones are identical. Seeds from one auto pack still vary plant to plant.
- Yield per square foot per month: a dialed mother and clone run usually beats autos. Autos close the gap when you only have one tent.
- Risk: mothers build up pests and pathogens over time. Autos start clean every run.
- Outdoor: autos finish before fall weather turns. Photos and mothers need the full season.
Pick first
Autoflower, for most people reading this. One tent, no separate veg space, no light leak worries, no timer gymnastics. Modern autos are not the weak plants from a decade ago, and a decent run gets you solid flower about ten weeks after a seed hits dirt. If you grow in a closet, a garage, or a 2x2 and you just want jars on the shelf, this is the path with the fewest ways to fail.
Keep a mother instead if you already run a veg space, you found a pheno you love, or you are working a perpetual harvest where everything has to finish on the same day. The upfront work is real. The payoff is uniformity you cannot buy in a seed pack.
Options to match
Whichever side you land on, buy accordingly.
If you picked autoflower
- Feminized auto seeds, so you are not burning a 10 week slot on a male.
- Fast-finishing indicas or hybrids if your nights run cold.
- A slightly larger pot than you think. Autos dislike transplanting.
If you picked mother plant
- Regular or feminized photoperiod seeds, then hunt for the keeper.
- Rooting plugs, a clone dome, and a second timer.
- A veg light you can run 18/6 without cooking the room.
We stock both sides at Eden Cannabis, in store and online, so you can read actual seed listings before you commit a whole tent to one plan. Ask the counter which strains are auto and which are photoperiod if the label is not obvious. It saves a lot of guessing.
