What the chart says at a glance
Line up a few hundred cannabis lab reports and the same names keep showing up. The most common terpenes in weed are myrcene, limonene, beta-caryophyllene, alpha-pinene, linalool, humulene, terpinolene, and ocimene. A typical flower sample tests high in three to five of those and shows the rest in trace amounts.
Myrcene sits at the top of the list most often. Beta-caryophyllene and limonene are usually right behind it, and pinene tends to round out the top five. Everything else depends on genetics and how the plant was grown.

The common terpenes, one by one
- Myrcene: earthy, musky, and a little like ripe mango or freshly cut grass. It is the single terpene most likely to be the dominant one in commercial flower, and it shows up in hops, lemongrass, and thyme too.
- Limonene: bright citrus peel. It is the second most abundant terpene in a lot of cultivars and the reason some jars smell like lemonade.
- Beta-caryophyllene: cracked black pepper, cloves, dry spice. It is unusual because it also interacts with CB2 receptors, which is why you see it in so many research papers.
- Alpha-pinene: pine needles and rosemary. It is common in sativa-leaning flower and in plenty of indicas as well, since the label rarely predicts chemistry.
- Linalool: lavender and soft floral soap. Usually a supporting player rather than the headliner, but easy to spot by smell.
- Humulene: hops, cut wood, a slight herbal bitterness. It is a close chemical cousin to what gives beer its aroma.
- Terpinolene: the outlier. Piney, floral, and a bit like nutmeg or tea tree. It tends to dominate a smaller number of cultivars rather than appear everywhere.
- Ocimene: sweet, green, slightly minty, with a hint of basil. Often present in low percentages alongside bigger terpenes.
You will also run into camphene, geraniol, valencene, bisabolol, and fenchol on longer reports. They are real, but they rarely lead the chart.

What the percentages on a chart mean
Total terpenes usually land somewhere between 1% and 3% of the flower's dry weight, and individual terpenes are measured in fractions of that. A single terpene often falls between 0.05% and 0.5%. When you see one break 1%, it is genuinely a terpene-forward batch.
The numbers are also relative to each other. A cultivar labeled "high in limonene" might carry 0.3% limonene, while another carries 0.6%. Two jars can share the same top terpene and smell nothing alike.
Why the same strain charts differently batch to batch
Terpene content is not fixed. Light intensity, harvest timing, drying temperature, cure length, and storage all move the numbers. Terpenes are volatile, so heat and air degrade them over time. Flower that sat in a warm car or a clear jar for a month will test lower than the same harvest did at packaging, and it will smell flatter too.
That is why I treat any published terpene chart as a starting point, not a spec sheet. If the batch number on the jar does not match the lab report, the chart does not apply.
Does the terpene chart predict the high?
Not in a clean, one-to-one way. Myrcene does not make a strain sedating on its own, and limonene does not guarantee an energetic afternoon. Terpenes shape aroma and flavor first. The idea that they team up with cannabinoids to change the overall experience, often called the entourage effect, is plausible and still debated in the research.
What is dependable: if a jar smells like citrus and pine, it probably has limonene and pinene on the label. Nose and chart usually agree.
How to use the chart when you are shopping
- Find the top two or three terpenes on the label instead of scanning the whole list.
- Match those names to aromas you already enjoy, not to strain names.
- Check that the harvest or batch date is recent. Fresh terpenes smell louder.
- Ask to see the COA if you are buying in a store. A chart without batch data is decoration.
Over time you will notice your own pattern. Plenty of people end up drawn to the same two or three terpenes again and again, and the chart just confirms what their nose already knew.
