What "D" means in cannabis products
"D" is short for delta in cannabinoid chemistry. It also stands for Diesel in strain names. On some dispensary menus it marks distillate or a discount. The context decides which one applies.
What is the Difference Between D and CBD?
D as delta in cannabinoid names
Delta is a Greek letter used in chemical naming. It marks the position of a double bond in the molecule. Delta-9 THC has a double bond at carbon 9 of its ring structure. Delta-8 THC has that bond at carbon 8. Delta-10 THC has it at carbon 10.
What Is D in CBD Oil? Delta-8 and Delta-9 Explained
Labels write these as Δ8-THC, Δ9-THC and Δ10-THC. The "D" in "D8" or "D9" is that delta. A package marked D9 holds delta-9 THC. A package marked D8 holds delta-8 THC.
Delta-8 compared with delta-9
- Delta-9 THC is the main psychoactive compound in cannabis. Federal law caps delta-9 THC in hemp at 0.3 percent on a dry weight basis.
- Delta-8 THC occurs in the plant in small amounts. Most delta-8 in commerce comes from conversion of CBD.
- Both share the formula C21H30O2. The double bond position differs.
D in strain names
In strain names, D is shorthand for Diesel. Sour D means Sour Diesel. Chem D is a Chemdog line. A menu that lists "Sour D" is naming the cultivar, not a cannabinoid.
D as a menu code
Dispensary menus use D in other ways. It can mark distillate, a refined extract with high THC content and little else. It can mark a deal or a discount tier. Store codes vary. Ask staff what a code means at that store. A code on one menu does not carry to another.
How to confirm what D means on a package
- Find the cannabinoid panel. It lists delta-9 THC, total THC and CBD with percentages.
- Check for a delta-8 or delta-10 line. A product with those lines is a converted cannabinoid product, not plant resin.
- Check the strain name field. A D there points to Diesel.
- Ask for the certificate of analysis. The lab report lists each cannabinoid by name and by delta position.
No federal standard defines shorthand codes on cannabis labels. State rules differ. The cannabinoid panel and the lab report are the two records with defined terms.
