What a consumption lounge is
A marijuana consumption lounge is a state-licensed business where adults 21 and older buy cannabis and use it on site. The lounge holds a license that is separate from a retail dispensary license in most states. Some lounges sell the product you use. Others charge a fee to use a table with cannabis you bring. No US state allows a lounge to sell alcohol and cannabis in the same room.
Where lounges operate
Lounges exist only in states that wrote on-site consumption into law. Four states have open, operating venues.
Are Cannabis Lounges Legal Near Me
- California. State law (SB 94, 2017) lets cities permit on-site consumption at licensed retailers. AB 374 (2023) added food, drinks, and live events. Venues operate in San Francisco, West Hollywood, and Palm Springs.
- Nevada. AB 341 (2021) created two license types: retail-attached lounges and independent lounges. The first Las Vegas lounge opened in 2023.
- New York. The 2021 cannabis law created on-site consumption licenses. The first Manhattan venue opened in 2023.
- Colorado. Denver voters approved social use venues in 2016. State hospitality licenses followed in 2019. Few cities allow them.
How to find one near you
- Open your state license database. California lists retailer licenses with an on-site consumption designation. Nevada lists lounge licenses. New York lists on-site consumption licenses. Colorado lists hospitality licenses.
- Search dispensary menus. A shop with a lounge lists an address, hours, and a cover charge.
- Call before you go. Hours change. Some venues close for private events.
- Confirm the license type. A retail shop with a lounge is not the same license as a standalone lounge.
Rules inside
- Government photo ID, age 21 and over.
- State purchase limits apply per day. Most lounges sell on site.
- Tobacco mixing is banned in several states.
- Alcohol is barred in most venues.
- Product leaves the building sealed. Open containers stay inside.
- DUI laws apply. Impairment limits match alcohol rules in most states.
What it costs
Cover charges run from $0 with a purchase to $50. Some venues add a consumption fee on top of product cost. Time limits run one to three hours. Food and nonalcoholic drinks vary by venue.
Federal law and travel
Cannabis is a Schedule I controlled substance under federal law. A state license does not change that. Do not carry cannabis across state lines or into an airport. Federal housing rules, employer drug tests, and federal land restrictions still apply.
