Short answer

Cannabis for vaping needs a medium-coarse grind, about 1 to 2 mm per piece. Break buds by hand first, fill the grinder two-thirds full, and twist 3 to 5 turns. Load the vaporizer chamber loose to about 80 percent full. Air has to pass through the material. Set the device between 315 F and 430 F (157 C to 220 C).

Why grind size matters

Heat reaches the surface of each plant piece. Smaller pieces expose more surface, so cannabinoids release faster. Pieces under 0.5 mm pack together and block airflow. A blocked chamber gives thin vapor and hot spots. Pieces over 3 mm release vapor at a slow rate and waste heat. Convection ovens push hot air through the load, so they need gaps. Conduction ovens touch the load with a hot wall, so they tolerate a finer grind.

Tools

  • Grinder: 2-piece for a fine grind, 3-piece for medium, 4-piece if you want a kief screen.
  • Fingers or scissors for the first break.
  • Small brush for the screen and threads.
  • 91 percent isopropyl alcohol for cleaning.
  • 62 percent humidity pack for dry flower.

Steps

  1. Check moisture. A bud should bend, not snap. Dry flower crumbles into dust and clogs screens.
  2. Break buds into pieces the size of a pea. Remove stems and seeds.
  3. Fill the grinder two-thirds full. More material means uneven turns.
  4. Twist the top 3 to 5 full turns. Stop when the lid turns with light resistance.
  5. Open and check the texture. Target 1 to 2 mm pieces. Shake and turn once more if pieces are large.
  6. Load the chamber. Drop material in, then tap the side. Do not press it down.
  7. Set the temperature. Start at 350 F for flavor.
  8. Draw for 5 to 10 seconds. Wait 20 to 30 seconds between draws.
  9. Stir the load at the halfway point of the session.
  10. Empty the chamber while it is warm. A cold chamber glues the load to the walls.

Grind size by device type

  • Conduction, where the oven touches the load: fine grind, 0.5 to 1 mm.
  • Convection, where hot air passes through: medium-coarse, 1.5 to 3 mm.
  • Hybrid: medium, 1 to 2 mm.
  • Portable pen with a small chamber: medium, loaded loose.
  • Desktop balloon or whip: coarse, 2 to 3 mm.

Temperature ranges

THC vaporizes near 315 F (157 C). CBD vaporizes near 320 F to 356 F (160 C to 180 C). Terpenes release from 310 F to 400 F. Most sessions run 350 F to 400 F. Above 430 F (220 C) plant material can char and taste bitter. Above 446 F (230 C) it can combust.

Kief

A 4-piece grinder drops trichomes through a screen into a lower chamber. That kief holds a high concentration of cannabinoids. Add a pinch to a chamber on its own or on top of ground flower. Kief runs hot and clogs screens, so keep the layer thin.

Cleaning

Resin builds on the teeth and the screen. Soak metal parts in 91 percent isopropyl alcohol for 20 to 30 minutes. Brush the screen with a stiff brush. Rinse with water and dry all parts before the next use. Clean a grinder every 2 to 4 weeks with daily use.

Common mistakes

  • Grinding to powder. Dust blocks airflow and passes through screens.
  • Packing the chamber. A tight load cuts vapor output.
  • Using wet flower. Moisture makes a gummy grind.
  • Skipping the stir. The load nearest the heater darkens first.
  • Filling a large chamber in a small device. Use 0.1 to 0.3 g in a portable chamber.
