What you need
- Dugout with matching bat
- Ground cannabis, medium grind

- Poker, paper clip, or small tool

Step by step
- Grind the cannabis to a medium grind. A fine powder pulls through the bat and into your mouth. Large chunks block airflow.
- Open the stash chamber and fill it about three quarters full. Leave room for the bat.
- Push the bowl end of the bat straight into the ground cannabis.
- Twist the bat a quarter turn. The flower packs into the tip.
- Lift the bat out and check the tip. It should look full and not crushed. Wipe off loose flower.
- Hold the bat to your lips.
- Touch the flame to the tip for about one second. Do not hold the flame there.
- Inhale at a steady rate. Draw slow.
- Stop when the flower turns to gray ash.
- Tap the bat or blow through the mouth end to clear the ash.
Packing problems
If air does not move, the bat is packed tight. Poke a channel through the load with the poker. If flower pulls into your mouth, the grind is too fine. Use a coarser grind. If the load falls out, press the bat into the stash with more pressure and twist again.
Cleaning
Resin builds up fast in a small bowl. Clean the bat every week or two with daily use.
Metal and glass bats: soak in 91% isopropyl alcohol for 30 minutes, then run a pipe cleaner through the tube. Rinse with warm water and let it dry.
Wood bats: wipe the bowl with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol. Do not soak wood. Water swells the grain. Scrape the stash chamber with a small brush. Store the dugout closed and keep the flower dry.

In the US, cannabis rules come from state law. Adult use is legal in some states and not others. The legal age is 21 in states with adult-use programs. Possession limits differ by state.
