How to Inhale Cannabis From a Pipe
To inhale from a pipe, pull the smoke into your mouth first, then move it into your lungs with a short breath of fresh air. This two-part draw keeps the hit cooler and makes coughing less likely. A pipe delivers hot, unfiltered smoke, so technique matters as much as the cannabis you pack.
Before You Start
- A clean hand pipe with a bowl, mouthpiece, and carb hole (if yours has one)
- Ground or hand-broken cannabis
- A lighter
- Water or a soft drink within reach
Steps
- Break the cannabis into pieces about the size of a peppercorn.
- Fill the bowl to the rim and press it down with light pressure, leaving air gaps between the pieces.
- Hold the pipe with your dominant hand and rest your thumb near the carb hole.
- Seal your lips around the mouthpiece so no air leaks at the edges.
- Cover the carb hole with your thumb if your pipe has one.
- Move the lighter flame to the edge of the bowl and let it touch the cannabis for a moment.
- Draw air through the mouthpiece while the flame is still on the bowl.
- Stop the flame when the cherry glows orange and keep drawing to fill your mouth with smoke.
- Lift your thumb off the carb hole and pull one short breath of air through the pipe.
- Open your mouth and breathe that smoke-and-air mix into your lungs.
- Hold for two to three seconds, then exhale.
- Set the pipe down and wait ten to fifteen minutes before you take another hit.
Common Mistakes
- Packing the bowl tight. A tight pack blocks airflow and forces you to pull harder, which sends hot smoke down your throat.
- Skipping the mouth-to-lung step. Breathing straight from the pipe into your windpipe triggers a cough reflex.
- Holding smoke for a long time. Most cannabinoids absorb within a few seconds, and longer holds only irritate your airways.
- Letting the flame sit on one spot. That burns the cannabis and gives the hit a harsh, ashy taste.
- Rushing hits back to back. Effects build for several minutes, so a fast second hit can overshoot what you wanted.
After the Session
Tap the ash into a fireproof container once the bowl cools. Scrape the bowl and mouthpiece with a pipe tool or a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol, then rinse and let the pipe dry. A clean pipe tastes better and pulls easier on your next session.
