The short answer
Exotic cannabis is a market label. It does not name a species, a THC level, or a grow method. Most strains sold as exotic are hybrids from one breeder, a rare phenotype, or a cross with a landrace. Grow them with the same steps used for any photoperiod cannabis: stable genetics, a sealed room, 12 hours of light to start flower, and a slow dry and cure.

What "exotic" means in the seed market
Seed sellers use the word for rare lineages, unusual terpene profiles, dark purple flowers, or high test results. Naming is not regulated in the US. A pack labeled exotic may hold Thai, Colombian, Afghani, or Hindu Kush ancestry, or it may hold a modern hybrid with a new name. Ask for the breeder, the lineage, and the flowering time before you buy.
Step 1: Start with stable genetics
Buy seeds or clones from a source that lists the breeder and the parent lines. Unstable lines push out male flowers on female plants under stress. Stress sources include light leaks in the dark period, root zone temperature above 80 F, pH swings, and high EC.
where to buy exotic cannabis strains
Feminized seeds cut the chance of a male plant. Regular seeds cost less and let you keep a male for breeding. A clone from a tested mother skips the phenotype hunt.
Step 2: Set the room targets
- Vegetative stage: 18 hours light, 6 hours dark. PPFD 400 to 600 µmol/m²/s. Air temperature 68 to 77 F. Relative humidity 55 to 65%.
- Flowering stage: 12 hours light, 12 hours dark. PPFD 600 to 900 µmol/m²/s. Air temperature 65 to 78 F. Relative humidity 40 to 50%, then 40% in the last two weeks.
- VPD: 0.8 to 1.1 kPa in veg, 1.2 to 1.6 kPa in flower.
- Water temperature in hydro systems: 65 to 70 F.
Landrace sativas from Thailand and Colombia can run 14 to 20 weeks. Hybrids finish in 8 to 11 weeks. Build the room schedule around the longest plant.
Step 3: Pick a medium and a nutrient plan
Soil pH: 6.0 to 6.8. Coco coir and rockwool pH: 5.5 to 6.2. EC targets: 0.8 to 1.4 in veg, 1.4 to 2.2 in flower. Water to runoff in coco to stop salt buildup.
Rare phenotypes show nutrient sensitivity. Start at half strength and raise EC over 7 to 10 days.
Step 4: Train the plant
Low stress training bends stems flat to spread light. Top once or twice after node 4 to 6. A SCROG net with 6 inch to 8 inch squares holds the canopy level. Remove leaves that block bud sites at day 21 and day 42 of flower. Dense exotic flowers trap moisture, so keep air moving through the canopy.
Step 5: Dry and cure
Dry whole plants at 60 F and 60% RH for 10 to 14 days. Trim, then cure in sealed jars at 58 to 62% RH. Burp the jars each day for the first week, then every 3 days for two weeks. Cure runs 2 to 4 weeks.
Common problems
- Hermaphrodites: check nodes each day in weeks 2 and 3 of flower. Remove male flowers with wet fingers.
- Bud rot: hold RH under 50% and move air. Botrytis shows as brown, soft patches.
- Light burn: raise the fixture if leaf tips bleach or curl.
- Stretch: sativa hybrids can double in height in the first 3 weeks of 12/12. Flip at 40% of the final canopy height.
Legal note
Cannabis is a Schedule I substance under US federal law. State rules differ. Home grow plant counts and possession limits vary by state. Check your state cannabis authority before you start seeds.
