What Is HHC?
HHC is short for hexahydrocannabinol. It is a psychoactive cannabinoid made by adding hydrogen to THC or CBD. Chemists call the reaction hydrogenation. HHC is not delta-9 THC, delta-8 THC, or cannabidiol. Roger Adams and co-workers synthesized HHC in 1944 and filed US Patent 2,417,782 on the compound. Trace amounts occur in cannabis pollen, seeds, and some hemp extracts. Most HHC sold in stores comes from a lab, not a plant.
How HHC Is Made
Manufacturers start with CBD or delta-8 THC from hemp. They add hydrogen under pressure with a metal catalyst such as palladium or nickel. The reaction converts double bonds into single bonds. The output is a thick oil. A batch holds two mirror-image forms: 9(R)-HHC and 9(S)-HHC. Receptor studies show the (S) form binds CB1 with more strength than the (R) form. A label that lists "HHC" alone does not state the ratio.
Effects and Potency
HHC binds CB1 and CB2 receptors. Its affinity at CB1 is lower than delta-9 THC. User reports describe relaxation, mood change, dry mouth, red eyes, and changes in short-term memory. Reported strength sits near 70 to 80 percent of delta-9 THC. That figure comes from anecdotal reports, not controlled human trials. Onset depends on the method. Inhaled HHC acts in minutes. Edibles take 30 minutes to 2 hours. Users report effects lasting 2 to 4 hours. It is not known if HHC triggers standard THC drug screens. No human trial has established a dose.
Legal Status in the US
The 2018 Farm Bill defines hemp as cannabis with 0.3 percent or less delta-9 THC on a dry weight basis. HHC is not delta-9 THC, and the DEA has not scheduled HHC by name. That leaves a gap. Some states allow HHC sales under hemp rules. Other states ban it with total-THC caps or lists of prohibited cannabinoids. Statutes change each session. Check your state law and the store license before you buy. Many states set the minimum age at 21.
Testing and Labels
Ask for a certificate of analysis (COA) from an ISO/IEC 17025 lab. The COA should list HHC content, residual delta-9 THC, residual solvents, heavy metals, pesticides, and microbials. A COA from an unaccredited lab proves less. The FDA has not approved HHC as a drug or a food additive. Research on HHC rests on receptor studies and user reports, not clinical trials.
