What greening out means
Greening out is the common term for a bad reaction after taking too much THC. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, sweating, chills, a fast heartbeat, and panic. It happens with edibles more than with smoked cannabis because of how the body handles THC.
Why edibles hit harder
Inhaled THC reaches the brain in minutes. Edibles pass through the liver, where enzymes convert THC into 11-hydroxy-THC. That metabolite is more potent and enters the brain in higher amounts. Onset runs 30 to 120 minutes. Peak blood levels arrive at 2 to 4 hours. Effects last 6 to 8 hours, and some people feel them for 12 hours or more. A person who takes a second dose at the 30-minute mark because "nothing happened" can end up with two or three times the intended amount.
Common symptoms
- Nausea and vomiting
- Dizziness or feeling faint
- Fast heartbeat
- Anxiety, panic, or a sense of doom
- Confusion, slowed speech, trouble tracking time
- Sweating, chills, trembling
- Dry mouth and red eyes
Most cases resolve on their own. No fatal overdose from THC alone has been documented in humans. Serious harm comes from falls, driving, mixing with alcohol or sedatives, and panic that leads to risky choices.
Green Out vs. Panic Attack: A Comparison Review
What to do
- Stop taking more cannabis.
- Move to a calm, safe place. Sit or lie down.
- Sip water. Do not force food if you feel sick.
- Take slow breaths. Count to four on the inhale, six on the exhale.
- Have someone stay with you. Note the time of the dose.
- Sleep if you can. Time is the main treatment.
Black pepper and CBD come up often as remedies. Evidence for both is thin and rests on small studies and anecdotal reports. CBD may blunt some THC effects, but it is not a reversal agent. No approved antidote exists.
When to get medical help
Call 911 or Poison Control for chest pain, trouble breathing, repeated vomiting, fainting, seizures, or severe confusion. Call right away if a child or a pet ate an edible. Young children who ingest THC can become sleepy, unresponsive, or short of breath, and they need medical review. Bring the packaging so staff can read the dose.
How to avoid it
- Start at 2.5 mg to 5 mg THC. Wait 2 hours before considering more.
- Read the label. Many states cap one serving at 10 mg THC and one package at 100 mg.
- Cut gummies or chocolates into smaller pieces when the label allows.
- Skip alcohol and sedatives on the same day.
- Store edibles in a locked container away from children and pets.
- Buy from licensed stores. Unregulated products can carry unknown doses.
Timeline
Onset: 30 to 120 minutes. Peak: 2 to 4 hours. Decline: 4 to 8 hours. Full resolution: 8 to 12 hours for most people. Larger doses, an empty stomach, and slower liver metabolism stretch each stage. Tolerance, body weight, and other drugs change the picture too. The exact numbers vary by person, and no formula predicts them.
