Hammer bubblers
The chamber stands vertical and the mouthpiece leaves the side at an angle, like a hammer head. It sits on a table without tipping, which matters if you set it down between hits. The side mouthpiece keeps the bowl in view while you draw. I find these the easiest to hand around a group because nobody has to rotate a wrist to find the mouthpiece.

Sidecar bubblers
A sidecar puts the bowl off to one side and the mouthpiece straight up. Your hand wraps the body and the mouthpiece points toward your face, so the pull feels closer to a small bong than a pipe. Angle matters here. Some sidecars aim the mouthpiece forward, which can splash your lips if you pull hard. Look at a photo from the side before you buy.

Sherlock and Gandalf styles
Long curved neck, bowl near the bottom, water chamber at the bend. They look good on a shelf and they cool smoke more than a short path because the vapor travels farther. The tradeoff is balance. A long neck is a lever, and a bump on the coffee table snaps it. If you want the look without the risk, find one with a wide flat base.

Straight tube and spoon-style bubblers
These look like a spoon pipe with a bulge near the bowl. Simple to make, cheap to replace, and hard to break because no thin neck hangs off the body. The chamber is small, so you get some cooling and not much filtration. Good first bubbler, and a decent travel piece if you pack it well.
Recyclers
A recycler pulls water through a loop and back into the chamber so it keeps moving. You get heavy diffusion without pulling a mouthful of water. They cost more, they have more places to break, and they want a specific water level. Great for big dabs or big flower snaps. Overkill for a casual evening pipe.
Mini and pocket bubblers
Small chamber, short path, often under five inches. They fit a jacket pocket and they still knock down some heat. What you give up is cooling volume. A tiny chamber plus a big hit means warm, harsh vapor on the back end. If you take one or two puffs at a time, a mini is all you need.
Percolators: what they change
A perc splits airflow into more, smaller bubbles. More surface contact, cooler smoke, smoother draw. It also adds drag and it collects resin in spots a pipe brush cannot reach.
- Inline: a horizontal tube with slits. Simple, low drag, easy to clean.
- Showerhead: a cylinder with holes around the sides. Solid middle ground.
- Tree: stacked arms. Strong diffusion, more drag, more fragile.
- Honeycomb: flat discs with many holes. Smooth, but the discs clog faster.
For flower, I look for one perc, maybe two. Three or more percs on a hand-held bubbler usually means a stiff pull and a cleaning chore.
Glass thickness and joints
Thicker glass survives drops better, but thickness alone tells you little. What matters is even walls and a clean weld where the neck meets the body. A ground glass joint is handy because you can swap bowls and drop in a quartz banger. A fixed bowl is simpler and one less thing to lose. Check that the joint angle suits your hand, not just the product photo.
What water does and does not filter
Water cools smoke and traps some tar and irritants, but it does not make smoking harmless, and it does not remove everything. Some cannabinoids get caught in the water too. If your throat is the main concern, a bubbler helps. If your lungs are the concern, no amount of percolation fixes that.
Cleaning and upkeep
Water sits in the chamber, so film and resin build up fast. Rinse with hot water after each session. Once a week, soak in isopropyl alcohol with coarse salt, shake, rinse. Skip the salt if you have a recycler with thin internal arms, since grit can scratch the glass. Change the water daily. Stale bong water tastes like exactly what it is.
How to pick one
- Decide where you use it. Couch and coffee table favor a hammer or a sherlock. Pocket favors a mini.
- Decide how hard you pull. Light puffs want a small chamber and one perc. Big rips want a recycler.
- Check the mouthpiece angle and the base width in side photos.
- Budget for a brush, alcohol, and a case. The case saves more glass than extra thickness does.
None of this is a rule. A hammer with a showerhead perc is a fine all-rounder, and if that is what your shop has in stock, you will not regret it.
