Short answer

Full melt hash is made with ice, cold water, and agitation. A rosin press is not part of the process at any stage. A press only converts finished hash into rosin by adding heat and pressure. If your goal is hash that bubbles and melts on a hot surface, you need clean trichome heads, a cold extraction, and a full dry. Hardware does not enter the equation.

What full melt means

Full melt is ice water hash that leaves little to nothing behind when dabbed. Graders use a six-star scale, and hash in the five and six star range is what people call full melt. Three things decide the grade: how many trichome heads survived intact, how much plant matter ended up in the bag, and how much moisture is left in the finished product.

Whole trichome heads melt clean. Broken heads and leaf fragments char and leave residue. That is the entire difference between a dabbable full melt and a bowl topper.

full melt hash vs dry sift cannabis

Prerequisites

  • Legal cannabis material, fresh frozen or dried and cured
  • Two 5-gallon buckets
  • A set of micron bags (220, 190, 160, 120, 73, 45, 25)
  • Filtered water and plenty of ice
  • A paddle or large spoon
  • 25-micron drying screens and parchment paper
  • A cold room or a work area under 60F

Ice water extraction, step by step

  1. Chill the room and the water to 34 to 40F.
  2. Fill one bucket with cold water and add ice.
  3. Stack the micron bags inside the second bucket, running from 220 down to 25.
  4. Add the cannabis material to the 220 bag.
  5. Cover the material with ice and cold water.
  6. Agitate with the paddle for 3 to 5 minutes on the first wash.
  7. Let the mixture settle for 2 to 3 minutes.
  8. Lift each bag in turn and rinse the sides with cold water.
  9. Scoop each grade onto a drying screen with a cold spoon.
  10. Wick standing water from the hash with a paper towel.
  11. Sieve the hash through a stainless strainer into fine granules.
  12. Spread the granules on parchment over a drying screen.
  13. Dry in a dark space at 55 to 60F and 40 to 50% humidity for 5 to 10 days.
  14. Test a rice grain sized sample on a hot banger.
  15. Jar the hash once it stops feeling cool and damp.

How to consume it without a press

Full melt is a finished product. Skip the press and use it directly.

Cannabis Full Melt Extraction Method: Ice Water Hash Guide

  • Low temp dab: heat the banger, wait for it to cool to 480 to 560F, then drop in a small piece.
  • Vaporizer: set a concentrate device or a dry herb vape with a concentrate pad to 380 to 430F.
  • Hot knife: heat the tip of a dab tool and touch it to the hash over a rig.
  • Bowl topper: crumble a pinch over flower in a pipe or bong.

Keep the portion small. Full melt expands and bubbles, and a grain of rice is a full dose for most people.

Grading and the melt test

Place a small piece of hash on a clean, hot banger. Six star hash melts to a clear puddle with a ring of residue so faint you can wipe it away with a dry swab. Five star leaves a light tan ring. Four star bubbles but leaves dark residue, which is best used on flower instead of a nail.

Common mistakes

  • Agitating too long or too hard, which breaks trichome heads and adds chlorophyll
  • Warm water, which softens the resin and smears it through the screens
  • Skipping the sieve, which traps moisture inside dense clumps
  • Jarring hash before it is dry, which causes mold
  • Using old, brittle, or machine trimmed material with few intact heads

Storage

Store full melt in a small glass jar in the refrigerator, sealed and away from light. Let the jar reach room temperature before opening it to keep condensation off the hash. Use it within a few months for the cleanest melt.
