Fimming vs Topping: The Difference
Topping and fimming both remove growth from the top of a cannabis plant. Both break apical dominance, the hormone signal that pushes one main stem above the rest. Auxin collects in the top shoot. Cut it, and the plant sends energy to lower nodes.

Topping takes the whole growth tip. Fimming takes part of it.

Topping
Cut the main stem above a node with clean scissors. Leave the node and its two shoots. Those two shoots become two main colas. The cut is a flat line, so the wound closes fast.

Do it in the vegetative stage, after the plant has 4 to 6 nodes and at least 3 weeks of growth. Most photoperiod plants recover in 2 to 5 days and resume growth from two points.

Fimming
Pinch or cut across the new growth tip and leave about 20 to 25 percent of the leaf tissue. The name is a short version of "fuck, I missed." The result is not a clean split. Three or four tops from one cut is common. Some plants give two. Some give six, at uneven heights.
Fim cuts take longer to settle. New tops can stay uneven for 5 to 10 days, which complicates a level canopy for a screen of green.
Side by Side
- Tops from one cut: topping 2, fimming 2 to 6.
- Predictability: topping high, fimming low.
- Recovery: topping 2 to 5 days, fimming 5 to 10 days.
- Canopy shape: topping even, fimming uneven.
- Plant stress: topping is one clean cut, fimming damages more tissue at the tip.
- Best stage: both in veg. Neither within two weeks of the flower flip.
Which to Pick First
Pick topping. Two even tops, a clean wound, and a result you can plan around. It pairs with low-stress training, trellis nets, and mainlining, all of which depend on symmetry. For a first grow, topping plus tie-downs builds a wide canopy with no guesswork.
Pick fimming as a second tool. Use it when you want more tops from one site and you accept a mixed result. Growers who keep a mother plant and run it many times learn how that plant answers a fim cut. The trait is not stable across strains.
When to Skip Both
Autoflowering plants have a fixed veg window, often 3 to 4 weeks. A stressed auto can start flower at a small size, and that yield does not come back. Skip topping and fimming on autos, or top one plant as a test.
Also skip both on seedlings under 4 nodes, on plants in flower, and on sick plants. Sterilize the blade with alcohol between plants.
Other Options
- Low-stress training: bend and tie stems with no cuts.
- Super cropping: pinch and bend a stem without breaking the skin.
- Screen of green: a net spreads growth across one plane.
- Lollipopping: strip lower growth in late veg or early flower.
