Short answer
No. Feminized seeds do not produce females 100% of the time. Most seed sellers quote a rate of 99.9% female. A pack of 10 seeds at that rate gives a male or intersex plant about 1 time in 100 packs. Grower reports show higher rates in some lots.

How feminized seeds are made
Cannabis sex is set by chromosomes. Female plants carry two X chromosomes. Male plants carry one X and one Y. A seed with XX genotype grows female flowers.
feminized seeds vs regular seeds
Breeders take a female plant and block ethylene with silver thiosulfate (STS) or colloidal silver. The treated plant grows male flowers. Those flowers hold pollen with X chromosomes and no Y. Pollinating a female with that pollen gives XX seeds. The Y chromosome is absent from the cross, so the offspring start as genetic females.

Why a male can still show up
- Stress: light leaks, heat above 85F, root damage, pH swings, and irregular light cycles push a female plant to grow male flowers.
- Genetics: some cultivars carry intersex traits. Selfed lines (S1) can raise the rate of male flowers.
- Contamination: a stray male in the breeding room adds Y pollen to a batch.
- Labeling: seed lots get mixed or mislabeled at packaging.
Male and intersex plants are not the same
A true male from a feminized seed carries XY. This is rare. Most plants sold as males from feminized packs are XX plants that grew male flowers, called intersex or hermaphrodite plants. They form both flower types on the same plant. Pollen from those sacs fertilizes female flowers and produces seeds in bud.

Reported rates
Sellers publish 99.9%. Published counts from research and grow logs range from 1 in 100 to 1 in 1,000 seeds. No large public dataset sets one rate for all breeders and all stress conditions.
How to check plants
- Flip to 12/12 light and inspect nodes at week 3 and week 4.
- Use a 10x loupe. Look for two white pistils at each node. A small ball on a short stalk is a pollen sac.
- Order a lab sex test on leaf tissue at week 3 of veg. Labs report XX or XY from a punch sample.
- Log light leaks, lamp distance, and night temperature each day.
What to do when one appears
Remove the plant before sacs open. Sacs open about 1 to 2 weeks after they form and release pollen that travels in air currents. Check the plants downwind of it. Clean the tent walls and fan blades with water.
