What a dab nail is
A dab nail is the heated surface on a dab rig where cannabis concentrate turns into vapor. You heat it with a torch, let it reach the temperature you want, then touch a small amount of oil or wax to the hot surface and inhale. Older rigs used a domed nail: a metal or quartz post under a glass dome, with a separate dabber. Most modern setups use a banger, which is a bucket-shaped nail with no dome. Either way, the nail is the part doing the work. Everything else on the rig moves vapor and cools it.

How a nail fits on the rig
Nails connect to the rig through a ground glass joint. Three things have to match:

- Joint size. 10mm, 14mm, and 18mm are the common sizes. A 14mm nail will not sit in a 10mm rig.
- Gender. Male nails have the ground glass taper on the outside. Female nails have it inside. Rigs come in both, so check before buying.
- Angle. Most rigs are built at 45 degrees or 90 degrees. A nail made for a 90 degree joint sits crooked on a 45 degree rig.
Nail materials
Quartz
Quartz is the default for a reason. It holds heat well, tastes clean, and does not add flavor of its own. It also handles thermal shock better than glass, though it is not indestructible. Thicker quartz takes longer to heat and holds temperature longer, which helps with low temp dabs. Chazzing, that gray cloudy buildup, happens when you dab too hot or leave oil sitting on the surface.
Titanium
Titanium heats fast, survives drops, and rarely breaks. It can impart a metallic note at high heat, and it needs to be seasoned before the first use. Grade 2 titanium is what I look for. Cheaper alloys are a gamble, since dab nails are not regulated as consumer products.
Ceramic
Ceramic nails give a clean flavor profile and hold heat steadily. The tradeoff is fragility. They chip, crack, and do not handle being dropped or quenched in water while hot.
Glass
Glass nails are cheap and mostly found on budget rigs. They lose heat fast and crack under a torch, so most people move on quickly.
Nail shapes worth knowing
- Flat top banger. A simple bucket with a flat rim. Cheap, easy to clean, and it works with a carb cap.
- Thermal or bucket banger. Two walls with a gap between them. The outer wall holds heat so the inner dish stays consistent.
- Terp slurper. A tall barrel with a dish and pillars. Built for low temp, flavor-forward dabs, and it takes practice to load.
- Honey bucket. A domed cup with a built-in intake. Good heat retention, awkward to swab.
- E-nail coil. Not a traditional nail. A coil wraps the banger and a controller holds a set temperature, which removes the torch guesswork.
Temperature is the bigger variable
The nail matters less than how hot you run it. Concentrates vaporize somewhere in the 300s to 500s Fahrenheit, but plenty of people dab hotter than that and pay for it with a harsh hit. A rough range people use: 450 to 550 F for flavor, 550 to 650 F for a bigger, heavier hit. Without a thermometer you are guessing by feel and timing. Quartz cools at a predictable rate, so count seconds after the torch goes off and adjust from there. Cold starts are another option. Load the concentrate first, then heat the bucket until it starts to bubble. It is forgiving and hard to burn.
Cleaning a nail
A clean nail tastes better and lasts longer. Swab the bucket with a dry cotton swab right after each dab while it is still warm, then follow with a swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol once it cools. Skip the alcohol on a glowing hot nail, since it will flash. Every week or two, soak quartz or titanium in isopropyl alcohol overnight and scrub off the residue. Do not put a hot nail in water. Thermal shock is what cracks quartz.
What to check before you buy
- Match joint size, gender, and angle to your rig.
- Pick a material based on how you dab. Quartz for flavor, titanium for durability.
- Look at wall thickness. Thin quartz loses heat almost as fast as glass.
- Decide on torch or e-nail before spending on a fancy bucket.
- Confirm a carb cap fits. Most bangers need one to work right.
Safety
A torch and a 600 F piece of quartz are the two real hazards. Heat the nail in a ventilated room, away from anything that can catch. Set the torch down on a hard surface, not a couch cushion. Remember that hot quartz looks identical to room temperature quartz, so keep the rig somewhere people will not grab it. High-potency concentrates deliver a lot of THC in one hit, and dabbing has been linked to reports of acute lung injury. Start small, and skip it if you have lung or heart conditions.
