A chillum is a straight, cone-shaped pipe with no carb hole. Cannabis goes in the wide end. You draw from the narrow end with the pipe held vertical. Most chillums hold 0.25 g to 1 g of ground flower.

How to Pack a Chillum Bowl

What a chillum is

A chillum is a tube. One end has a bowl. The other end is the mouthpiece. There is no stem and no side hole. The shape is a cone in most cases, so the bowl is wider than the mouthpiece.

Length runs from 2 in to 6 in. Traditional use is documented in India, where the pipe was smoked with charas. Glass versions are the form sold in most US shops today.

Parts of a chillum

  • Bowl: wide end, holds the flower
  • Bore: straight channel through the body
  • Mouthpiece: narrow end
  • Screen: glass or mesh insert at the bowl
  • Cap or plug on some models

Sizes and materials

  • Glass: 2 in to 6 in, easy to clean, load stays visible
  • Ceramic: heavier, holds heat
  • Wood: porous, keeps resin and smell
  • Metal: heats fast, can add taste
  • Silicone: flexible, harder to clean

A 2 in to 3 in glass chillum holds about 0.1 g to 0.25 g. A 4 in to 6 in pipe holds 0.5 g to 1 g.

what is a cannabis chillum

How to pack a chillum

  1. Break or grind flower to pieces of 2 mm to 4 mm. Remove stems and seeds.
  2. Drop a glass screen or a mesh screen into the bowl. This blocks ash and keeps the bore clear.
  3. Load 0.25 g for a small pipe, 0.5 g for a larger one. Add in small pinches.
  4. Press with light finger pressure. The pack needs gaps for air.
  5. Leave 2 mm to 3 mm of space at the rim. A full bowl pulls hot and clogs.

Test airflow before you light. Draw on the mouthpiece with the pipe unlit. If the pull feels tight, break up the load and repack.

How to use a chillum

  1. Hold the chillum vertical, bowl up.
  2. Tilt the top away from your face at about 45 degrees.
  3. Put the mouthpiece to your lips and seal it.
  4. Light the edge of the bowl with a lighter or hemp wick. Keep the flame off the flower and let the ember pull in.
  5. Inhale in one steady draw, 3 seconds to 5 seconds.
  6. Stop. Ash falls out when you turn the pipe. Tap the bowl over a tray.

A chillum gives a hot hit. The smoke travels a short path. Draw slow at first until you know the airflow.

Screen options

  • Glass screen (jack): reusable, no metal taste, fits 10 mm to 14 mm bowls
  • Mesh screen: low cost, needs replacing after 3 to 5 uses
  • Honeycomb glass screen: built into some bowls

No screen means ash and resin pull into your mouth. It also clogs the bore faster.

Cleaning

  1. Empty the bowl while the pipe is warm, not hot.
  2. Soak glass in 91% isopropyl alcohol for 30 minutes. Add coarse salt for the bore.
  3. Scrub with a pipe brush or a cotton swab.
  4. Rinse with warm water and let it dry.

Clean when the draw tightens. Resin builds in the bore and cuts airflow. A clogged chillum also tastes harsh.

Chillum vs one-hitter vs joint

  • One-hitter: 2 in to 3 in, holds 0.1 g, one or two draws
  • Chillum: wider bowl, holds more, built for one session
  • Joint: paper, 0.5 g to 1 g, burns between draws

A chillum uses no paper and no rolling. Nothing burns between draws, unlike a joint.

Health notes

Cannabis smoke contains tar and irritants. NIDA lists respiratory effects from smoking. A chillum sends smoke to the mouth and throat with little cooling. Draws feel hot with a short pipe.

Do not share a mouthpiece without cleaning it. Glass can chip. Check the rim and the bore for cracks before each use.
