Answer first
CBD does not reverse THC toxicosis in pets. No controlled study shows that CBD shortens or blocks the effects of cannabis in dogs or cats. Giving CBD after a cannabis ingestion can add sedation and loss of coordination to signs the pet already has. Call a veterinarian or an animal poison helpline before you give anything by mouth.

Why CBD is not an antidote
- There is no antidote for THC in veterinary medicine. Care is supportive: decontamination, fluids, monitoring.
- CBD inhibits cytochrome P450 enzymes in laboratory studies. THC is cleared by the same enzyme family. Slowing that pathway can prolong THC effects.
- Dogs carry a higher density of CB1 receptors in the brain than humans do. THC acts on those receptors with more force.
- Pet CBD products are not FDA-approved for animals. Labels list CBD content. Many do not list THC content, and some contain THC.
- CBD causes its own side effects in dogs: sedation, wobbling, vomiting, loose stool, raised liver enzymes.
Signs of cannabis ingestion
Signs start 30 to 60 minutes after an edible and peak within 1 to 3 hours. Chocolate and xylitol in edibles add separate risks.
my dog ate cannabis what to do
- Wobbling, loss of balance
- Lethargy or depression
- Startle response to touch
- Dilated pupils
- Urinary incontinence
- Vomiting
- Tremors, low body temperature, slow heart rate
- In severe cases: seizures, coma
Most dogs recover within 24 hours with supportive care. Fat-heavy edibles such as butter or chocolate slow absorption and stretch that timeline.

What to do
- Call your veterinarian, an emergency clinic, or a poison helpline. Use the word cannabis. Give the product, dose, and time.
- Keep the packaging. THC and CBD numbers on the label guide treatment.
- Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian tells you to. Edibles with chocolate or xylitol change that decision.
- Keep the pet warm, quiet, and away from stairs.
- Do not give food, water, or CBD to a pet that is vomiting or hard to rouse.
If you already gave CBD
Report it. Tell the veterinarian the product name, CBD milligrams, THC milligrams if listed, the amount given, and the time. CBD can increase sedation and reduce coordination. It also interacts with drugs used in the clinic, including some seizure and pain medications.
Evidence gaps
Most CBD studies in dogs cover osteoarthritis pain and epilepsy, not THC toxicosis. No dose of CBD is established as safe or effective for cannabis exposure in pets. State law on veterinary cannabis varies. No state allows a veterinarian to prescribe CBD as a treatment for THC poisoning.
