Short answer
Top an autoflower once, at the 4th or 5th node, between day 14 and day 21 from sprout. Cut above the node, not below it. Skip the cut if pistils show at the growth tips, or if the plant is past day 25. One top is the limit for most autoflower runs. Two or more cuts delay flower and cut yield.
Why autoflowers differ from photoperiod plants
Photoperiod plants wait for a light change. You set veg length. Autoflowers carry ruderalis genetics and start flowering on a fixed clock, 21 to 35 days from sprout. Topping removes the apical bud and the auxin supply that holds side shoots down. The plant answers with two new growth tips. That response costs 2 to 5 days of vertical growth. A photoperiod plant absorbs the delay inside a 6 week veg. An autoflower has no spare week.
How Many Times Can You Top a Weed Plant?
Node count and cut point
- Node 1: single-blade leaves.
- Node 3: three-blade leaves, stem still soft.
- Node 4 to 5: five-blade leaves, stem firms. Best cut point.
- Day 21 to 25: pre-flowers can appear. Stop topping.
Count nodes from the base of the stem. Cut 1/4 inch above the 4th or 5th node with clean snips. Leave the two small shoots at that node intact. Those shoots become the main colas.
Signals to skip the cut
- Pistils are visible at the growth tips.
- The plant stalled from cold, low light, or root stress.
- Pot volume is under 3 gallons.
- The plant is a dwarf pheno or a low-stress cultivar.
What to do instead
Low-stress training bends the main stem. It opens the canopy with no cut and no recovery window. Tie the top toward the pot rim at day 18 to 21. Leaf tucking moves fan leaves off bud sites. Both methods fit an autoflower schedule with less risk.
After the cut
Hold temperature at 75 to 80 F, relative humidity at 60 to 70 percent, and light at 18/6 or 20/4. Water as normal. New tips show in 2 to 4 days. Feed at half strength for 3 days. Raise nutrients after new growth reaches 1 inch.
Yield and evidence
No controlled trial compares topped and untopped autoflowers across many cultivars. Grower reports split. Topping can raise cola count and even the canopy. It can also cost 3 to 7 days of veg and lower total dry weight. Test one plant per strain before you top a full tray.
