What changes during exercise
- Heart rate reserve drops. If resting heart rate is 95 instead of 62, zone 2 starts at a higher absolute number, and the body works below what the monitor shows.
- Perceived effort can fall. Small trials report lower ratings of perceived exertion at the same workload in some users. The evidence base is small and mixed.
- Cooling and fluid loss add strain. Cannabis can blunt the sweat response in some users, which matters in heat.
Oxygen transport and the lungs

What is not known

- Measure resting heart rate before the session. Build zones from heart rate reserve, not from max heart rate alone.
- Wait 3 hours after smoking or vaping before hard training. Wait 6 hours or longer after an edible.
- Track heart rate and perceived effort together. A large gap means the monitor is a poor guide that day.
- Avoid cannabis before exercise in heat or at altitude.
- Stop for chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, or an irregular pulse, and get medical care.
