Short answer

An automatic cannabis grow kit is a self-contained tent or cabinet with a light, fan, carbon filter, and timer. Some kits add pumps and a water reservoir. The timer runs the light and fan. You mix nutrients, check pH, and refill water. Most kits fit in a closet and draw 100W to 480W from a wall outlet.

What is in the box

  • Grow tent or cabinet. Common sizes are 2x2 ft, 3x3 ft, and 4x4 ft.
  • LED light. Actual draw is the number that matters. A 2x2 tent needs 100W to 150W. A 4x4 tent needs 400W to 480W.
  • Inline fan and carbon filter. The filter removes odor. Air exchange should turn over the tent volume 1 to 3 times per minute.
  • Timer or controller. Better controllers change fan speed with temperature and humidity.
  • Fabric pots, saucers, and a drain tray.
  • Nutrients: base A and B bottles, or a one-part powder.
  • pH and EC meters, plus pH up and pH down.

Why "automatic" means two things

Sellers use the word for two products. One is an automated system: pumps, timers, and sensors do the daily work. The other is an autoflowering seed. Autoflowering plants carry Cannabis ruderalis genetics. They flower by age, not by light cycle. A photoperiod plant needs 12 hours of dark to start flowering. An autoflower does not.

Most autoflower strains finish in 8 to 11 weeks from seed. Light schedules of 18 hours on and 6 off, or 20 on and 4 off, are common. A 24-hour light schedule works but adds power cost with little gain.

Cost and power

Kit prices run about $200 to $400 for a 2x2 setup and $600 to $1,500 for a 4x4. Power is the ongoing cost. A 150W light on 20 hours uses 3 kWh per day, or about 210 kWh over 10 weeks. At $0.16 per kWh that is about $34. Add 20 percent for the fan and controller.

Space and yield

One autoflower plant needs about 1 to 2 square feet in a small tent. A 2x2 tent holds 1 to 2 plants and returns about 1 to 3 ounces dry. A 4x4 tent holds 4 to 6 plants and can return 1 to 2 ounces per plant with strong light and good airflow. Yield depends on light intensity, root volume, and genetics. Seed sellers list high numbers. Treat them as a ceiling, not an average.

Environment targets

  • Temperature: 68F to 78F with lights on. Keep the night drop under 10F.
  • Humidity: 55 to 65 percent in veg. 40 to 50 percent in late flower.
  • pH in soil: 6.0 to 7.0. In coco or hydro: 5.5 to 6.5.
  • Water: let the top inch of soil dry before the next watering.

Setup steps

  1. Pick a room with a power outlet and a door that closes. Heat and odor leave the tent.
  2. Assemble the tent. Hang the filter, fan, and light. Run the fan so air passes through the filter.
  3. Set the timer to 18 hours on and 6 off for autoflowers.
  4. Fill pots with soil or coco. Water until runoff.
  5. Plant the seed 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep, or start it in a wet paper towel first.
  6. Keep the light 18 to 24 inches above the canopy. Raise it as plants grow.
  7. Start nutrients at one quarter strength in week 2 or 3.

Legal notes

Cannabis remains illegal under US federal law. State rules differ. Some states allow home cultivation for adults, with plant counts from 2 to 12 per household. Some allow medical grows only. Some ban home grow. Check your state statute and local ordinance before you buy a kit. A kit that arrives by mail in a legal state can still violate a lease or a local rule.

Common problems

  • Heat buildup: a small tent with a 400W light runs hot. Match light wattage to tent size.
  • Odor: run a carbon filter from the first week of flower. Filters last 6 to 12 months.
  • Nutrient burn: leaf tips turn brown and curl. Cut the dose in half.
  • Stretch: long gaps between branches mean the light sits too far away or is too weak.
  • Root rot: pots sit in standing water. Empty the drain tray.
