How much dry sift does trim actually yield?
Most people working clean sugar trim land between 5% and 15% by weight. A pound of good trim, about 454 grams, usually gives 25 to 65 grams of dry sift. The wide spread is not guesswork. It comes down to three things: how much resin was on the trim to begin with, the mesh size you run, and how hard you work the material.
If someone tells you they pulled 30% off trim, they are either running popcorn buds, counting a second and third pull that is mostly plant matter, or measuring wet weight somewhere in the process. On straight trim, 10% is a solid day.

Trim quality decides most of your yield
Sugar trim is the small leaves that grow out of the flower and carry visible trichomes. That is the material worth sifting. Fan leaves, stems, and anything with a stem running through it will drag your number down and add green taste to the final product.
If your trim pile is half fan leaf, expect to land near the bottom of the range, closer to 3% to 6%. If you kept popcorn buds and larfy flower in the same bin, you can push past 15% because buds carry far more resin per gram than leaves do. I sort before I sift, not after.
Screen size moves the number as much as technique does
Aperture is the single biggest lever. A 70 to 90 micron screen holds back more plant fiber and gives you a cleaner, lighter sift, but it also keeps some resin behind. A 150 micron screen lets more through, so the yield climbs, along with chlorophyll and broken leaf bits.
Most home setups use two screens stacked. A work screen around 125 to 160 micron breaks up the material and drops the bulk through, then a collection screen at 70 to 90 micron catches the good heads. That combination gives you a usable yield without turning the whole batch green.
Temperature and moisture matter more than most people think
Trichome heads are brittle when cold. Working in a room around 40 to 50°F, or chilling the trim in a freezer for 20 to 30 minutes before you start, helps the heads snap off cleanly instead of smearing into the mesh.
Moisture runs the other way. Trim that still feels spongy will clump, clog the screen, and cut your yield hard. Dry it until it crumbles when you pinch it, then let it sit in a room at roughly 40% to 50% relative humidity. Too dry and it turns to dust, which passes every screen and ruins the sift.
Agitation: short cycles beat long ones
Run 60 to 90 second cycles and clean the screen between them. The first pass gets the ripest, heaviest heads. The second pass adds volume. By the fourth or fifth pass you are mostly knocking leaf fragments through, and the yield gain is not worth the quality loss.
Overworking the material is the most common way people talk themselves into a higher number that they cannot sell or press.
Realistic yield math
- 1 lb clean sugar trim, 90 micron single screen: roughly 20 to 45 g
- 1 lb clean sugar trim, two-screen stack: roughly 30 to 65 g
- 1 lb trim with heavy fan leaf content: roughly 10 to 25 g
- 1 lb popcorn buds and larf: roughly 60 to 90 g
How to push yield without wrecking quality
Freeze the trim, keep the room cold, load the screen lightly, and use a soft-bristle card instead of pressing down. Static can help too. Rubbing a nitrile glove or a piece of parchment to build a charge lifts contaminant off a clean pile and lets you separate heads from leaf dust without more agitation.
Mistakes that cost you grams
Overloading the screen is the big one. A thin, even layer moves resin; a thick pile just compresses and clogs. Working wet trim is the second. Chasing a third or fourth pull is the third, and it is the one that makes people think their technique is better than it is.
Weigh your starting trim, weigh your finished sift, and write both numbers down. After a few runs you will know what your material can do, and the guesswork disappears.
