Start with what the discount is not
Cannabis is a Schedule I controlled substance under federal law. No federal veteran benefit covers cannabis. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs does not prescribe it or pay for it. VA providers can talk with you about cannabis use, but they cannot recommend it as treatment. A veteran discount comes from the store or from a state medical program, not from the VA.

Compare out-the-door prices, not sticker prices
An advertised discount means little if the base price is high. Ask for the out-the-door total, which includes state excise tax and local sales tax. Medical patients often pay less tax than adult-use customers. The same flower can cost 30% more on the adult-use menu.
Compare price per milligram of THC for edibles and vapes. A $40 gummy pack with 100 mg THC costs $0.40 per mg. A $25 pack with 50 mg costs $0.50 per mg. The cheaper sticker is the worse deal.
Parameters to check
- Purchase limits. Most states cap how much you can buy per day or per transaction.
- Possession limits. The limit at the store may differ from the limit in your car.
- Age. 21 and over for adult use in most states. 18 and over with a medical card in some states.
- State lines. You cannot cross a state border with cannabis, even between two legal states.
- Delivery zones. Delivery is limited to the state where the store holds a license.
Pitfalls
Discounts often exclude sale items, clearance, and accessories. Ask if the veteran rate applies to the full menu. Some stores run a veteran day once a month instead of a standing discount. Online menus update at different times than in-store systems. A product shown as in stock may be sold out. Call first if you plan to drive more than 20 minutes.
Do not give a copy of your DD-214 to an unlicensed seller. Do not buy from a delivery service that cannot name its state license number. Legal stores post license numbers.
