How much cannabis concentrate should you take?
Start with 1 to 3 mg of THC. For most people that is a pinhead-sized dab, a single short draw from a vape pen, or 1 to 2.5 mg of decarbed oil in an edible. Wait at least 15 minutes before taking more, because concentrates hit hard and fast.
Concentrates are not flower. A portion that looks like a crumb can carry more THC than an entire joint, so the size of the dab tells you almost nothing about the dose.
How many milligrams of THC are in a dab?
One gram of 80% concentrate contains about 800 mg of THC. A rice-grain dab weighs roughly 0.025 g, which works out to about 20 mg of THC. A pea-sized dab can pass 50 mg, which is a dose for people with a heavy daily tolerance.
Smaller than you think is the rule. A pinhead dab of about 0.005 g at 80% THC delivers around 4 mg, which is a reasonable first dose for a new or returning user.
Concentrate dosage by tolerance level
Use these as starting points, then adjust after 15 to 30 minutes. Body weight and metabolism matter less than how often you use cannabis.
- New or returning after a long break: 1 to 3 mg THC
- Occasional use, about once a week: 3 to 5 mg THC
- Regular daily use: 5 to 15 mg THC
- Heavy daily tolerance: 15 to 30 mg THC or more
Why concentrate dosing is different from flower
Dried flower usually tests between 15% and 25% THC, while shatter, wax, live resin, and distillate often test from 60% to 90% THC. A gram of flower at 20% holds 200 mg of THC. The same weight of concentrate at 80% holds 800 mg, four times as much.
That is why the label matters more than the eyeball test. Read total THC in milligrams, then divide by the number of doses in the package.
How to measure a concentrate dose without a lab
- Check the label for total THC percentage or total milligrams per gram.
- Weigh the amount with a 0.001 g scale if you have one.
- Multiply the weight by the THC percentage to get your milligram dose.
- Take half of what feels like your normal dab the first time you try a new product.
How long do concentrate effects last?
Inhaled concentrate takes effect in 5 to 10 minutes, peaks around 15 to 30 minutes, and fades over 1 to 3 hours. Edibles made from decarbed concentrate can take 30 to 120 minutes to start and last 4 to 8 hours. Never redose an edible before the two-hour mark.
What to do if you take too much concentrate
Common signs of overconsumption include a racing heart, nausea, confusion, and intense anxiety. Drink water, sit somewhere calm, and remind yourself that a THC high passes. Call poison control or 911 if you have chest pain, trouble breathing, or vomiting that will not stop.
Can you eat cannabis concentrate?
Raw concentrate is not active when swallowed. THCA must be heated through decarboxylation before it becomes psychoactive THC, which is why edible manufacturers process oil before packaging. Eating an unheated dab will not get you high, but it also will not give you a predictable dose if it is partially activated.
Legal limits and safe use
Concentrates are for adults 21 and older in states with legal cannabis. Colorado and Washington cap retail edibles at 10 mg of THC per serving and 100 mg per package, and purchase limits on concentrate apply per transaction. Do not drive after dabbing, and store concentrates where children and pets cannot reach them.
