Cannabis bud rot treatment: the short answer
You cannot cure bud rot. Once Botrytis cinerea gets inside a flower, that tissue is gone, and no spray, wash, or drying method makes it safe to smoke. What you can do is stop the spread. Cut out every affected cola with sterile snips, bag the waste, and fix the humidity and airflow that let the mold take hold. If rot is deep in a dense top cola, plan on losing that cola.
Cannabis Bud Rot Prevention Cost: What You'll Actually Spend
What you are actually looking at
Bud rot is gray mold, caused by Botrytis cinerea. It often shows up first on the outside of a cola as a single sugar leaf that goes brown, dry, and curls while the leaves around it stay green. That one dead leaf is the tell. Pull the bud open near it and you will find gray fuzz, brown mushy patches, or a stem that has gone tan and soft.
Cannabis Bud Rot Prevention Tips Reddit
It is not the same as powdery mildew, which sits on the surface as white dust and can sometimes be managed. Botrytis grows from the inside out. It also spreads by spores, so every time you handle an infected plant, brush against it, or water overhead, you move spores onto healthy flowers.
Cannabis Bud Rot Prevention for Outdoor Plants: A Grower's Guide
How to cut it out
Do this with the plant still standing, and do it in the morning when the room is dry.
cannabis bud rot causes and prevention
- Sanitize snips in 70% isopropyl alcohol before you start and between every cut.
- Cut 1 to 2 inches below the visible rot, into clean green stem. Leave a margin of infected tissue and it comes back.
- Drop each piece straight into a sealed plastic bag. Do not set it on the floor or in a trim bin where spores can drift.
- Bag it and trash it. Do not compost it, and do not toss it on the garden bed.
- Check the plant again in 2 to 3 days. New spots show up where you thought you had it handled.
If more than a third of the plant is affected, or the main stem is soft and discolored, the plant is done. Pull it, bag it, and clean the space before the next run.
Fix the conditions that caused it
Botrytis needs still air, high humidity, and a wound or weak tissue. Take away any one of the three and it stalls.
- Keep flower-room humidity at 45 to 55% RH. Below 50% is where spores stop germinating well.
- Hold temps in the 65 to 75F range and avoid swings that push humidity up at lights-off.
- Move air through the canopy, not just over the top. A fan that gently rattles the colas is worth more than a bigger exhaust fan.
- Defoliate the lower third and any leaf lying flat on a bud. Dense canopy plus a humid night is the setup.
- Never water overhead in flower. Water the medium and keep splashing off the leaves.
- Space plants so no two colas touch. Contact points are where rot starts.
- Outdoors, watch for budworms and caterpillars. Every bite is an entry wound.
Products: what helps and what does not
Biological controls such as Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, and Trichoderma species can suppress Botrytis when applied before infection as part of a routine. Potassium bicarbonate is used against powdery mildew and does little for gray mold. None of them kill rot inside a bud.
Check your state rules before spraying anything in flower. Many products are not labeled for cannabis, and residues can fail a compliance test even when the product is organic. In most legal markets, anything applied after the halfway point of flower is a risk not worth taking.
If harvest is close
When rot is spreading and you are within a week or two of your window, harvest early. You lose some weight and some potency, but you keep the crop. Harvest in the morning, inspect every cola as you cut, and set anything suspect in a separate bin. Do not dry a questionable cola with the rest of the harvest, because mold keeps growing in the dry room.
Dry at 60 to 65F and 55 to 60% RH with real airflow. Jar only when stems snap. Buds that go into a jar too wet will grow mold in storage, and you will find it weeks later when you open the lid.
For dispensary shoppers
Legal flower in most states is tested for total yeast and mold, which is one reason regulated product is worth the price. That testing is not a guarantee for every gram. If you open a jar and see gray fuzz, brown patches, or smell must or ammonia, stop. Do not pick around it, do not vape it, and do not cook with it. Heat kills the mold but not the spores, and inhaling spores is the part that affects your lungs.
Take it back. Dispensaries in the US generally exchange or refund flower with visible mold, and they want to know because it points at a batch. Store what you keep in a sealed jar away from heat and light, and do not leave it in a hot car.
