Start with the job, not the lighter

A torch lighter is for dabs, quartz bangers, titanium nails, and glass with thick walls. It is not the right tool for a bowl of flower. A torch flame hits one point and chars flower in under a second. For flower, use a soft flame or a hemp wick.

Dab temperature decides which torch you need. Low-temp dabs run 550F to 650F at the banger surface. High-temp dabs run 700F and up. A single-jet torch reaches those numbers. It takes time. A three-jet torch cuts heat-up time by half or more.

Parameters that matter

  • Jet count. One jet for 20mm bangers and smaller. Two or three jets for 20mm to 30mm quartz. Four jets give a wide flame, fast heat, and higher fuel burn.
  • Ignition. Piezo ignition uses a crystal and a spring. It fails after repeated heat cycles. Flint ignition uses a wheel and a replaceable flint. Flint lasts longer in a hot environment.
  • Fuel purity. Buy butane labeled 5x refined or higher. 11x and near-zero impurity labels cost more. Impurities leave residue in the nozzle and clog jets.
  • Tank size. Refillable tanks hold 5g to 20g of butane. A 10g tank gives about 15 to 25 minutes of total flame time. Larger tanks weigh more and sit in the hand worse.
  • Flame adjuster. A wheel or dial that changes gas flow. Test it. The flame should drop to a low blue cone and rise without sputtering.
  • Nozzle material. Brass or stainless steel. Plastic nozzles deform under heat.
  • Safety lock. A sliding switch or a two-step ignition. CPSC rule 16 CFR Part 1210 requires child-resistant mechanisms on disposable and novelty lighters sold in the US. Refillable torches fall outside that rule. Test the lock yourself.

Pitfalls

  1. Refilling a warm lighter. Butane boils at 31F. A warm tank holds pressure and pushes fuel back out of the fill valve.
  2. Skipping the purge. Air trapped in the tank causes sputter and a weak flame. Press the fill valve with a small tool for two seconds before each refill.
  3. Overfilling. Stop at 15 to 20 seconds, or when the fill valve spits. A tank packed with liquid butane can vent through the pressure relief.
  4. Leaving it in a car. Cabin temperatures pass 140F. Tank pressure climbs. Seals leak or the tank ruptures.
  5. Cheap nozzles. Plastic and soft brass deform. The flame flares sideways or the jet clogs in weeks.
  6. Air travel. TSA bans torch lighters in carry-on and checked bags. Disposable and Zippo-style lighters are allowed in carry-on with limits.
  7. Shipping. Carriers treat butane as a hazardous material. Confirm shipping terms before you order a filled lighter online.
  8. Holding heat on one spot. Quartz cracks from thermal shock. Heat in short passes and rotate the banger.

How to test at the store

Ask to see the lighter fueled. Check the flame shape, the adjuster range, and the ignition. Look at the nozzle and the fill valve. Both should have metal cores. Weigh the lighter in your hand. A light body with a large tank means thin walls.
