There is no single best LED grow light for marijuana. The best light is the one that delivers the right photon intensity across your exact canopy size at a price you accept. For a 4x4 ft tent in flower, that means about 450 to 600 watts of efficient LED with a dimmable driver and a uniform PPFD map. For a 2x2 ft space, a 100 to 150 watt board covers one or two plants. Buy diodes, driver, and coverage before you buy a brand name.

What the key specs mean
- PPFD (photosynthetic photon flux density) measures light that plants can use at canopy level. It is the number that matters, not lumens.
- Efficiency (micromoles per joule, or µmol/J) tells you how many photons a fixture makes per watt. Quality boards run 2.5 to 3.0 µmol/J. Older blurple lights often sit below 1.5.
- Coverage is the area that reaches your target PPFD. A light rated for a 4x4 veg footprint may flower only a 3x3.
- Spectrum matters less than intensity. Full-spectrum white with added red covers veg and flower.
- Dimming and heat control let you run the fixture at 50 percent in veg and reduce heat in small tents.

- Seedling: 100 to 300 µmol/m²/s

How to choose a light in 8 steps
- Measure the growing area you plan to flower, in square feet.
- Pick your target PPFD for flower, such as 800 µmol/m²/s.
- Convert square feet to square meters by dividing by 10.76.
- Multiply your target PPFD by the area in square meters to get the total photons per second you need.
- Divide that number by the fixture efficiency in µmol/J to get required wattage.
- Compare the published PPFD map against your canopy, and read the corner values, not just the center.
- Confirm the driver brand, diode type, dimming range, and warranty length before you pay.
- Hang the fixture at the recommended height, then measure or watch the plants for one week and adjust.
Worked example
A 4x4 ft tent is 16 square feet, or 1.49 square meters. At a flower target of 800 µmol/m²/s you need about 1,192 µmol/s of photon flux. Divide by 2.8 µmol/J and you need near 425 watts. Buy a 450 watt fixture and dim it down instead of a 300 watt fixture you cannot push higher.

Light burn versus light hunger
Pale, bleached top leaves and taco-shaped curling point to too much light or heat. Slow stretch, wide node spacing, and airy buds point to too little. Move the fixture 2 to 3 inches at a time, then wait three days before you judge the result.
