What an at-home cannabis test kit measures
Two product types share the name. The first is a drug screen for THC metabolites in urine or saliva. The second is a kit for cannabis flower that checks THC content, moisture, mold, or pesticides. The two answer different questions and use different chemistry.

Urine and saliva kits
Most kits use a lateral flow immunoassay. An antibody binds THC-COOH, the metabolite the liver produces. The test does not measure THC itself and does not measure effects.
At-Home Cannabis Test Kit Accuracy
Federal workplace programs use a 50 ng/mL screen cutoff and a 15 ng/mL confirmatory cutoff, per SAMHSA guidelines. Home kits copy the screen step. A confirmatory step needs a certified lab with GC-MS or LC-MS/MS.
Detection windows vary with dose, body fat, fluid intake, and frequency of use:
- Single use: up to 3 days in urine
- Daily use: 1 to 2 weeks
- Heavy chronic use: up to 30 days
- Saliva: 24 to 48 hours in most cases
Sampling steps: collect urine midstream, dip the strip to the marked line, hold for 10 to 15 seconds, read at 5 minutes. Results past 10 minutes are void.
Reading the result lines
Two lines mean negative. One line at the control position and no line at the test position mean positive. No control line means the test failed and the result is invalid. A faint test line counts as a line.
Cross-reactions and false results
Some hemp-derived CBD products and a few prescription drugs produce a positive screen. High fluid intake dilutes urine and can push a sample below the cutoff without changing how much THC the body holds. Time since last use drives most of the variance.
No at-home kit detects impairment. THC clears from blood within hours while metabolites sit in fat tissue for days or weeks. A positive urine result shows past use, not current effect.
Flower potency and contaminant kits
Home potency kits use a color reaction or a small hand-held device. Reported THC numbers carry a wide error band. Accredited labs measure potency with HPLC and pesticides with LC-MS/MS, and report to 0.1 percent. Mold and yeast need culture or qPCR. No FDA clearance exists for at-home cannabis potency kits.
Cost
Metabolite kits run $10 to $30 for one to five tests. Potency kits run $25 to $75. A lab panel for flower testing runs $50 to $150 per sample.
When a home result is not enough
Do not use a home kit for employment disputes, legal matters, or medical decisions. A screen result at home has no chain of custody. Request a confirmatory test at a SAMHSA-certified lab if the answer matters.
